NORTH CAROLINA — A North Carolina family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Daniel Roberts and his 20-year-old son, Dylan Day Roberts, who died in a tragic incident at Holden Beach after Dylan reportedly entered the water in an attempt to save his father.
The tragedy unfolded on the morning of Sunday, August 2, when emergency crews responded to reports of two people struggling in the ocean off Holden Beach. First responders launched rescue efforts but were unable to save either individual. Authorities later identified the victims as 46-year-old Daniel Roberts and 20-year-old Dylan Day Roberts.
According to a GoFundMe campaign established to support the Roberts family, Dylan lost his life while courageously attempting to rescue his father from the water.
“In his father’s moment of greatest need, Dylan acted without hesitation, courageously entering the water and ultimately giving his own life while trying to save him,” the fundraiser states. “His final act was one of extraordinary bravery, selflessness, and love—Dylan died a hero.”
The fundraiser has drawn widespread community support, with thousands of dollars raised to assist the grieving family.
Beyond his final act of heroism, Dylan is being remembered for the positive impact he made on those around him. Town Tavern in Blowing Rock, where Dylan worked, shared a heartfelt tribute describing him as much more than an employee.
“Dylan was far more than a valued employee—he was a crucial part of our family, bringing an unmistakable energy, warmth, and positive spirit to the Tavern day after day,” the restaurant wrote in a statement shared Sunday evening.
The tribute continued, praising Dylan’s dedication, leadership, and character despite his young age.
“In an industry often marked by long hours and difficult struggles, Dylan brought life, laughter, and purpose,” the statement read. “Despite his young age, he became a true leader through his extraordinary work ethic, dependability, and willingness to help those around him. The Town Tavern became Dylan’s canvas, and through his dedication, personality, and heart, he left a lasting mark on our staff, our customers, and our community.”
The restaurant also shared the family’s GoFundMe campaign, encouraging community members to support the Roberts family during this difficult time. At the time of publication, the fundraiser had raised nearly $14,000 toward funeral expenses and other family needs.
